Have a look at the figure below in this tweet. Before the British left Infant mortality in 1947 was 146. That means a mother lost 1 in 7 children. Add to that water borne diseases, lack of sanitation and antibiotics. 
India managed to half it's death rate in just 30 years after independence. After that have a look at the decline in birth rates despite Norman Borlaug and the Green Revolution.
