Have a look at the figure below in this tweet. Before the British left Infant mortality in 1947 was 146. That means a mother lost 1 in 7 children. Add to that water borne diseases, lack of sanitation and antibiotics. Image
India managed to half it's death rate in just 30 years after independence. After that have a look at the decline in birth rates despite Norman Borlaug and the Green Revolution.
India did not see a major famine after Churchill.
Indian parents after independence did not expect half their children to survive adulthood, just as they had seen half their siblings die.
In just one generation India turned things around. The first generation of Indian had planned to have two kids by having four.
They were pleasantly surprised and so were my uncles and aunts. n/n
