This piece that Gary Wills wrote immediately following Sandy Hook ends with an interesting proposal I'd forgotten about. At the site of every mass shooting we should erect a statue of Charlton Heston, or Wayne LaPierre or some other NRA spokesperson. nybooks.com/daily/2012/12/…
Or perhaps it should be a public monument that shows the local members of Congress who have voted with & taken money from the NRA; pictured next to those whose lives were taken in the mass shooting.
Because what the NRA and the politicians who support it are saying is this: "Our ahistorical & extremist reading of the 2nd Amendment, which just happens to serve the interests of gun manufacturers, is more important than the thousands of lives taken each year by gun violence."
So let's build public monuments to the people so passionately committed to the idea that their self-serving historical fantasy about guns is more important than the lives of their fellow humans.
