Call them out: NY won historic justice reform this past year. Ended cash bail for most crimes. Prosecutors arent just fearmongering to change law back. They’re spending resources training on tricks to subvert the law to jail people that shouldn’t be jailed.theroot.com/when-n-y-ended…
Last year: “Police unions, prosecutors & “law & order” advocates fought the reforms tooth & nail, contending that it would turn NY streets into “the purge.”

Now: Weaponizing tragic crimes to blame on law changes & going round the state training prosecutors on how to subvert law.
Among the tricks Nassau County prosecutor Jed Painter is going around teaching people to keep jailing more people, are tips to make “judges “believe” that suspects were dangerous, thereby giving courts the option of setting a cash bail where it normally wouldn’t be legal.”
This isn’t about public safety. If they cared they’d (a) be working to ensure the law worked & (b) acknowledge that jail only increases recividivism. Bail gives prosecutors enormous negotiating leverage. In jail, far more likely to plead. Ending cash bail takes away their power.
The laws go into effect Jan 2020. We all need to be fully aware of the cynical tactics that prosecutors & police in partnership w/ pro-carceral, sensationalist media outlets like the NY Post are carrying out. Call them out on it. Dont give them any credence. Don’t fall for it.
