I have deep respect for @WhipClyburn, but I strongly disagree that black ppl have a generational problem w/ gay ppl like @PeteButtigieg. Have we forgotten all the gay people who’ve been a part of the fight for liberation, from Langston Hughes to James Baldwin to Bayard Rustin?
When you read the record, the same people who want to block gay rights are against voting rights, labor rights, health care & basic humans rights.
In America we don’t have a race test, religious test, or a sex test for political office.
Instead of worrying about someone’s sexual orientation, Black ppl, white ppl—all ppl—should be worrying about where they stand on health care, living wages, voting rights, climate change, & public education.
On the ground, @WhipClyburn, this is where most Black people are. They are looking at the real issues & not the bedroom b/c if we do that, then we have to throw away some of the greatest heroes and sheros of our race.
This is a wedge issue that religious nationalists have been cultivating for years:
If you disagree w/ @PeteButtigieg’s policies—or any other candidates, for that matter—then do that. But don’t make Black folks’ issue with him sexuality. Most of our people are not that shallow.
