quick thread on my new @PplPolicyProj paper. everyone knows America is terrible at healthcare, paid leave, etc. but you may not know we are also last among rich nations at goofing off peoplespolicyproject.org/projects/the-l…
@PplPolicyProj if you adjust for productivity (because richer nations tend to work less), then the US is the second-most overworked nation in *the whole OECD,* just behind Iceland
@PplPolicyProj wind the tape back to 1970: the US was in the middle of the pack in hours worked. since then we have been lapped by everyone
@PplPolicyProj what gives? basically, our work institutions are crap. our unemployment benefits are lousy:
@PplPolicyProj we give almost no support to new parents
@PplPolicyProj and a great many people can't afford to retire. the percent of American over-65s in the labor force is almost the highest among peer nations peoplespolicyproject.org/projects/the-l…
@PplPolicyProj and unlike every peer nation, we have no mandatory paid vacation whatsoever!
@PplPolicyProj so what is to be done? simple: we copy and paste from better-governed countries. first, MOAR VACATION DAYS peoplespolicyproject.org/projects/the-l…
@PplPolicyProj second, new national family and sick leave, and hugely boosted unemployment benefits
@PplPolicyProj finally, a massive increase in Social Security benefits
@PplPolicyProj anyway, read the whole thing! and thanks again to the @GravelInstitute for sponsoring the project peoplespolicyproject.org/projects/the-l…
one final addendum from @jeffspross with an idea I didn't include but would fit -- a fully 4-day work week theweek.com/articles/87644…
