It would be easy. Into Trump’s simpleton mind Putin plants two seeds. One, that Putin can provide the means to legitimize his election by proving USIC/Mueller wrong, even if they weren’t.That’s one carrot, Trump Tower Moscow likely another. SUBPOENA THE INTERPRETER, DEMS.
What stick Putin used in Helsinki still unknown. Obviously a big one because Trump was the lump of quivering jello the world saw in front of the cameras after the 1-on-1 meeting. The stick would not have been recognizable to interpreter. Would have been in coded mobspeak.
My guess is that Putin was/is planning a counterfeit Crossfire server to be found in Ukraine. That would be top priority and should still be anticipated. Well within RU tech capacity. Would sow more confusion in US and legitimize Hannity-Breitbart Axis of Evil. All Russian goals.
DNC emails could be fabricated and blended with known good examples. Facts don’t matter to nutjob base. Conspiracy theories do. Counterfeiting the server - and making it seem like Rudy had to hunt it down - would perfectly advance Trump/Russia agenda.
Dem denials of veracity wouldn’t matter. Forensic IT work would not matter. Blasting the word “emails” is a proven winner in US presidential politics.
The existence, or mere promise, of a counterfeit server would account for Rudy’s maniacal clinging to the story that Ukraine attacked US elections. He knows he’s a criminal. A fake server could be enough to raise reasonable doubt, handy at trial.
Trump has repeatedly said he trusts Putin more than USIC. Putin would not squander that.
Denying US military aid to Ukraine clearly a Putin-directed scheme. He rubs his plumped-up piglet’s belly and tells him that Ukraine are the nasties and that he, buddy Putin, will be happy to oblige Trump’s revenge by pulling the trigger of the gun he’s holding to their head.
Cui Bono? Putin of course. Potential advantages to Trump more vaporware than anything, but Trump wouldn’t know that. Stupid, vengeful, venal and self-obsessed people make for easy marks.

As for a counterfeit server, it seems impossible that one would not have been in the works. It could have been the key all the complicit and apologists were expecting. But withholding it now that there’s too much heat, would also serve Putin by damaging all the little patsies.
Putin’s overarching goal is to destroy the US. To inflict damage wherever possible. This plan makes it impossible for him to lose. Only the degree of his success is variable. This shitshow is just starting.
Should a Dem make it to the Oval in 20, destroying Putin should be job one, though I fear it will not be. Nothing else - healthcare, infrastructure, inequality - can be tackled until Putin’s information war blows up in his dead-eyed face and takes his Fox/US allies with him.
