So, the UCP are introducing a bill barring trespassers from suing landowners *retroactively*. First of all, retroactive laws tend to be suspect. Secondly, there is ONE GUY that this law was created for. ONE GUY. #ableg 1/9

In February, 2018, Ryan Watson trespassed on Eddie Maurice's land. Maurice shot twice and Watson was struck by a bullet. Watson was charged with trespassing, mischief and theft. All charges against Maurice were dropped. 2/9

Watson sued Maurice for personal damages. Maurice has launched a counter-suit. He has an online fundraiser that has raised over $50,000 to pay for lawyers. 3/9

The whole thing is, frankly, bizarre. Shooting people should be illegal. There should be some consequence to firing a weapon where it could, potentially, injure or kill a person. I don't care if the person in question is rummaging through your vehicle. 4/9
This brings to mind the 2016 case in Saskatchewan of Colten Boushie, shot and killed by landowner Gerald Stanley. Stanley was acquitted. The case raised the spectre of deep racism on the prairies. But it also shows a tendency to ascribe more rights to landowners... 5/9
Over those with less economic security. It's frankly shocking to think that people who possess property can now shoot others in order to protect their stuff. That says that some people's stuff is worth more than other people's lives. 6/9

Finally, a word about ex post facto law... To criminalize or prohibit something after the fact is very probably unconstitutional. The exception would be amnesty laws, such as that which expunged the records of men charged with homosexuality prior to 1988. 8/9
This new UCP law would be unlikely to withstand a constitutional challenge. It would be like if the CPC won federally and passed a law making cannabis illegal again, retroactive to Oct 17, 2018, then began having anyone who had purchased weed while it was legal arrested. 9/9

What do you do with relatives who are octagenarians who hold "the natives" in extreme disdain because "all they do is sit around all day and wait for the cheques from us, the taxpayers, to arrive. They just want money. They don't do anything to earn it."? I am at my wit's end.1/8
I mean, you don't want to shout at old people... Well, actually, you really do. But you know you shouldn't. Because they're old. And kind of frail. Nothing really is gained by arguing. But they want to argue about it. They egg you on. They dare you to contradict them. 2/8
And you know they are so, so wrong. And you have piles of evidence, treaties, history, documentation, and you know they won't look at it or believe it because it doesn't fit their world view. And you know you should be nice. They will die sooner, rather than later... 3/8

BTW, Teachers do not earn $100,000 a year. Not many of them, anyway. Schools allocate $100,000 per teacher hired but many hire new teachers at ~ $50K and use the rest to run the school.
The UCP is short-changing Alberta's children. Next time they whinge about "Oh! we can't leave a debt to future generations!" point out that future generations will be poorly educated and that is worse.

Why is this news, you may ask... Well, it means that every time your doctor send you for a screening test - blood, urine, mammogram, colonoscopy, or for a diagnostic test - X-ray, ultrasound, MRI, CT-scan, etc., YOU will be paying directly for it.
Or perhaps you will be paying higher insurance premiums so they can pay for it on your behalf. In the US, insurers have a reputation for questioning and not covering some tests. The more tests you have, the more your premiums go up. Whether insurance covers them or not...

Here's what's different (1)
The #NDP's interim supply bill was tabled in June, to start July 1 (edmonton.ctvnews.ca/mobile/interim…). Folks who work for libraries in southern Alberta confirm they received 75% of their grant then, and the remaining 25% in early Sept thru special approval of the Minister of the day (2)
The #UCP's interim supply bill has come, literally, months later and is giving libraries 50% of their operating grant with about 6 weeks left in the fiscal year (3)

This is pretty serious.

During 2017 & 2018, I went thru about 1,100 Canadian tax returns going back 15 years. I showed how our charitable system can be gamed and I exposed one guy, @BlakeBromley, who says he created 650 charities. I found 130 of them. And ...
... and I found a group of charities that reported $1.1 BILLION in total revenue. About $600 million was tax-receipted.

Here’s the thing: Of the $1.1 BILLION, only 10% was spent on actual charity. The rest was just road-tripped around in what looks to me like a big shell game.

Hilarious. Also, this morning I read through the entire #UCP platform, and it is full of dogwhistles, pandering to business, and deeply troubling policy "ideas" (a word I'm using rather charitably here).

Kenney continues to be leader of three parties, and we should all remember his astroturfing of social media accounts, like Unite Alberta. It's in this spirit, of course, that the platform isn't actually on the UCP website. #ableg
It's fine to have election-specific pages, but it's interesting to have an entire website dedicated to this campaign that, really, operates as yet another Kenney front, which was registered in 2016, a year and a half before the UCP even existed. #ableg

PWDV Act, 2005, gives a broad definition of what qualifies as ‘domestic abuse’. It includes physical, sexual, verbal, emotional and economic abuse. Section 3 reads:
The Act provides for a ‘Protection Officer’ to help you through various processes under the law. This Officer can help you file the complaint, tell you about your rights, make an application to the Magistrate for you, etc.
