New: Warren wipes Harvard from populist pitch. On the trail, she refers to herself as a "teacher" instead of "professor," she asks for "Okies" in the crowd rather than ppl from Mass, when she wears college swag, it's often a Berkshire Comm College hat. politico.com/news/2019/11/0…
Warren's pitch is designed to try to rebut "elitism," the heart of Scott Brown's 2012 strategy. A Brown campaign memo put it this way: “Professor Warren is an out-of-touch elitist whose ideas are informed by two decades on the campus of Harvard, but don’t work in the real world.”
Brown went there b/c campaign focus groups found vulnerability: "Some believe she is phony because she doesn’t live in the same world as they do,” the campaign wrote of the focus groups. “Others cite her background as justification of her advocating for the middle class.”
Whether voters ultimately see her as Betsy from Norman, OK or Professor Warren from Cambridge could be the difference for her candidacy, which is why she leans into her up-by-her bootstraps "Okie" biography.
When Brown tried to criticize her Harvard salary in '12 during the first debate, her response was this: “So, my first teaching job in law was — I made $18,070 and I’m proud of the fact that I’ve made it to one of the top spots in teaching.”
Still, it looks like the Brown attack lines are re-emerging in conservative media as Warren has rebounded in the polls. politifact.com/punditfact/sta…
Despite FB labeling that "partly false info," there are some signs that the critique is still spreading. Outside an October town hall in Newport, New Hampshire, one Trump supporter protesting her went to the talking pt. “$450,000 to teach one class is not income equality.”
Warren's first TV ad also leans into her bio, uses old black-and-white pictures and video to chronicle her upbringing in Oklahoma, her brothers’ military careers, her decision to drop out of college to get married, and her return to a commuter college.
Jenn Alford Teaster a NH state senate candidate who hasn’t endorsed said this: “When people look at Warren, they should see that Harvard was the culmination of a lifetime of work and she’s trying to maintain that path for others to reach their own potential.”
Some interesting crosstabs on education from the economist project as well. She kills every other candidate among post-grads. Whether she can continue to grow w/ HS and some college (which she has this year) is the q. projects.economist.com/democratic-pri…
