No one wants to hear from actual poor people about poverty. True story: mid-90s I wrote a short story for an anthology based largely on my own experience of homelessness & my upper middle class editor at my then-publisher rejected it for her anthology as "not believable."

My editor actually said that educated people don't end up on the street, so it strained credulity for the reader. Which readers, I queried.
My therapist works with homeless people and I told her this story and she sighed heavily.

Poverty is crushing, living in poverty is crushing and it never gets less so and a society that handwaves poor people while giving cover to obscenely wealthy men skipping out on paying taxes is not a just society, full stop.

And whenever I talk about being poor on here folks either have the same response as my editor or they just look away like I did something unseemly in public. A few poor people will respond with their own stories, but really, no one RTs stuff about being poor. It's not "hot."
