Real privilege getting to share our research on #OER and personalization with the #GoOpen community this morning. (Thanks for having me!) Figured I'd share some our key learning points here... 1/ #curriculum #instructionalmaterials
First off, shout out to the amazing leaders in the #GoOpen community. This work isn't about "free" materials, these folks are digging deep to engage teachers in curriculum, flex to meet unique needs, support effective instruction, and build a community. Super cool. 2/
We started the convo with some definition... what did I mean when using terms like "curriculum" "#OER" and "personalization"? Here was @LearningAccel starting point, curious how others agree/disagree. 3/
Heart of our work is figuring out how to straddle world in which we believe BOTH that high-quality, standards-aligned materials critical tool for educators & students while also thinking abt how learners' uniqueness informs day-to-day implementation. Can #OER help us do both? 4/
I shared some lessons from national study @LearningAccel did last year with 50+ leaders around country. 5/
One key finding was about the models for instructional materials being chosen. Eds are creating pretty complex "material ecosystems" in classrooms, combining different core material approaches with supplementary resources for assessment, RTI, etc. 6/
Complexity of "core" materials chosen really impacts work eds undertake... & pose different tradeoffs. Full course much more rigid but offer ton of coherence. On opposite site, playlists offer lot of modularity & flexibility, but also work to create rigor/coherence. 7/
I've been thinking about this like cake-baking. Baking from box is likely to deliver consistency, but baking from scratch offers nuance, choice. What are we expecting teams to do, and why? (Metaphor could also be construction-- pre-fab to custom.) 8/
Next big point was around the mechanisms for personalization. Some of these are really about instructional differentiation, others about choice creation, integration of deeper tasks. Interesting to reflect on which points folks are emphasizing, and why? 9/
Interesting equity note on participant raised was that not all kids get the same personalization. When do our strategies emphasize some (e.g. addressing unfinished learning gaps) versus others (e.g. tailoring to interest)? Why? What can we learn from that? 10/
Here are some of the ways @LearningAccel saw eds using #personalizedlearning strategies in #OER environments... 11/
There is too much 4 tchrs to do alone. In review of system strategies, @LearningAccel observed 8 curricular strategy "building blocks" : vision, central systems/processes, clear stds, driving expert, platform, time, cxns for learning, on-site supports 12/
Interesting participant observation is that on-site supports for teachers (e.g. coaches, teams) can't be divorced/passively engaged with curricular initiative. Doesn't matter how many coaches you have if they aren't helping to drive implementation and learning. 13/
Finally, shared some of big shifts we're seeing as needed in #personalizedlearning environments. Resources must be designed to be used modularly but with coherence and interoperability, digital (not digitized), able to be taught team, more dynamic in presumes sequencing . 14/
Perhaps MOST importantly- engaging deeply around instructional materials, pedagogical content could be incredibly powerful lever for building teacher capacity. PD for curriculum should focus on that, not just page-turning implementation/"fidelity". See quote @jetwestfall 15/
.@LearningAccel captured some of best system strategies we found in a guidance series-- what is #OER, how do we find/vet, what are strategies to personalize (in data-driven way), how to provide effective #professionaldevelopment.
