This is so tiresome. Yes, Trump is being vindictive. Yes, I'm totally with Vindman. But to think you'll get Trump on this - when he can easily claim he wants Vindman out for not being on board with policy - is just stupid. NSC is a political job, not a union gig. /1
And future presidents will want the ability to fire NSC people who dissent from policy. Whistleblowers are whistleblowers. But until we see if the *Army* punishes Vindman, he's not "fired," he's being sent back to the DoD. But is this the ground to fight Trump on now? No. /2
As a political matter, Trump can claim he should have the staff he wants, and Vindman's testimony shows wrongdoing, but also, as Trump could argue, that he has a senior NSC guy who doesn't like his foreign policy. This is not some unique thing in DC.
