This is so tiresome. Yes, Trump is being vindictive. Yes, I'm totally with Vindman. But to think you'll get Trump on this - when he can easily claim he wants Vindman out for not being on board with policy - is just stupid. NSC is a political job, not a union gig. /1
And future presidents will want the ability to fire NSC people who dissent from policy. Whistleblowers are whistleblowers. But until we see if the *Army* punishes Vindman, he's not "fired," he's being sent back to the DoD. But is this the ground to fight Trump on now? No. /2
As a political matter, Trump can claim he should have the staff he wants, and Vindman's testimony shows wrongdoing, but also, as Trump could argue, that he has a senior NSC guy who doesn't like his foreign policy. This is not some unique thing in DC.
Stay. Focused.

This is Exhibit A: Former U.S. attorney Joe DiGenova attaches a name to the whistleblower and calls him equivalent to Lincoln's assassin. /1
I am not linking to the @dcexaminer story that mentions it, because: Shame on them for even running it. DiGenova said it on some DC radio talk show I've never heard of. Using words like "regicide" and "decapitation," DiGenova has thrown out a name and put a man in danger. /2
If you think this is okay, if you applaud it and think that this is the behavior you would expect from a a former U.S. attorney, I don't need your friendship. Your values and mine are too far apart. Because if your politics supports this, you're basically a bad person. /3

While I am loath ever to amplify anything D'Souza says, I'll just put my #nuclear expert hat on and say: It didn't happen because it was something that had to be created by all-out nuclear war. So, he's right that it didn't happen. Because all-out nuclear war didn't happen. /1
Whether "nuclear winter" would have happened in the wake of a huge nuclear exchange is still debatable, since it depended on any number of scenarios to dump enough ash into the sky to blot out the sun. I never thought much on it because "all-out nuclear war" was enough for me. /2
But it's still worth thinking about now that we have people talking about "small" exchanges, which would likely raise ecological hell of a similar kind. But none of that is related to D'Souza's moronic point. Thank you for coming to this Pu-239 fueled TED talk. /3x

So far, Lowry’s effort seems to be to define away all the stuff that makes nationalism so nasty, and then rechristen what’s left as nationalism to stay jake with the rubes and their vanguard, who know exactly what they mean by “nationalism” when they use it. /1
More to the point, Lowry tries to include anyone who really loves their country more than other countries as “nationalist”, as though there isn’t a perfectly serviceable word in “patriotism“ that has far less blood and soil connection. /2
There is no version of “nationalism” that does not end up with some connection to blood. That is not the same thing as calling America a “nation” founded on ideas. But nationalism as a concept is antithetical to Americanism. /3
