I got a call today, one of the many calls everyone gets begging for donations. This was to raise the money for new equipment for the burn ward at Foothills Hospital. 1/8
I did not give them any money. Instead I asked why the government wasn't buying new equipment for the burn unit. This is one of the things we pay taxes for, isn't it? 2/8
Why should we pay taxes twice? Once to the government and a second time to pay for the public goods that the government should have bought with our taxes in the first place? 3/8
I know, you're all thinking, "silly girl! the Alberta government can't afford equipment to heal little children with terrible burns (fundraiser's line), they have premiers to fly around and 'Travelling Dave' to fund while he lives it up in London!" 4/8
The UCP government doesn't have time or money to waste on things like burned children, or AISH recipients, or overcrowded, underfunded schools, or a diagnostics lab, or a cancer centre, or... 5/8
They know the public will pick up the slack, or learn to do without. After all, they have secret meetings to hold and stuff... And, you know, if you give the people all these things, like health care and education for free, they won't appreciate them... 6/8
They'll just squander them. They'll become dependent. They'll be no better than all those homeless people and addicts. No, the UCP government can't let that happen. Austerity is really a kindness. Saving people from their natural slovenly ways. 7/8
I can't believe the UCP has only been government for about 6 months. This is going to be a really long three years. I predict a lot more rants like this, btw. 8/8
