I recall when I was in early elementary school & the federal government introduced multiculturalism & all children had to take French at school. Oh, the outcry! The moaning and gnashing of teeth! The outrage that the government was forcing another language "down our throats!" 2/8
And I recall, as a very wee child, wondering what could be bad about learning another language? 3/8
Didn't that mean you could talk to more people? You could travel to more places and speak the local language? You could get some understanding about other people and the way they see the world? 4/8
I don't understand this aversion to learning, to being exposed to other cultures and ideas. Learning is good. I try to learn continuously. I have, recently, been learning about mitochondrial DNA, and archaeology, and wave-forms, and I am trying to learn Gaelic. 5/8
If you study archaeology you don't start to think and behave like an ancient Mesopotamian. If you study anthropology you don't start to think and behave like a member of a Yanomani tribe. 6/8
What you do, hopefully, is gain an understanding of the worldview of people different from you and that informs your thinking and the way you navigate the world and your relationships. 7/8
