Five years ago I was stuck in an airport for a month just after being released from prison and expelled from my former country. As a "stateless" Palestinian there was nowhere to send me to, so I lived in an airport. I am still nervous around airports.
...Which is why stunts like this get to me. Getting pulled away from a line of customers and talked down to. Talk about screwed up business practices piled on top of PTSD triggers.

If Israeli settlements in the West Bank aren't illegal, then "Israel is an apartheid state" is no longer an argument, no longer controversial, it's just fact.
Reminder that there will never be a two-state solution and those who are still aiming for one are simply delusional. There is a one-state fact, and that state is an apartheid state.
Apartheid states cannot be negotiated with, they must be dismantled and a democracy established in their place.

When have you ever been the "good guys" in the Middle East?
The last time I remember seeing public popular expression of gratitude for something the US did was in Libya in 2011. Before that, Kuwait in 1991.
Ironically, despite the very high levels of anti-American sentiment in the region, people still dream of emigrating to the US. The hatred is for the most part caused by US foreign policy.

Reminder that sectarianism has nothing to do with theology and very little with actual religion. Sectarianism is a form of tribalism. We can't have literal racism when everyone is mixed, so we got this. Sectarianism is our version of racism and we should analyze it as such.
Also a reminder that racism is not about literal (biological) races, because they don't exist. Racism is also more than mere bigotry. Racism is about institutional inequality and exclusion of groups of human beings based upon bullshit categories.
(Now watch some heads explode when I say that we should seek insights from critical race theory when analyzing sectarianism in the Muslim world, lol)

Five years ago, almost to the day, I arrived in England on a KLM flight at Norwich airport, bleary-eyed after packing a moving truck until 4am. Now, in a few weeks, I'll be flying to Stuttgart, to a city I'll be calling home again. /1
For the first 2 years of our time in England, I taught, continuing my career of 10 years - first as a supply teacher in Great Yarmouth, then as head of a Humanities department in Lowestoft.

It was a time unlike any I'd experienced previously. It's a time I'll never forget. /2
In 2015 we moved again, to Luton. It was a town very different from the seaside town I'd spent a year in previously, but I grew to love it.

In 2016 however, I quit teaching. The demands of the system were too much, and, as I would find out later, I was being hamstrung by ADD. /3

Five years ago, Michael Brown, Jr. was killed in Ferguson, Missouri. To mark his death, I put together 2 stories—one on what has & hasn’t changed in Ferguson & one on the trauma people who intimately experienced the protests & unrest there still face. Both will be on @NewsHour.
Here’s the first piece:

In 2014, Ferguson issued nearly 12K tickets. Most were for minor municipal code violations. In 2017, that number was under 2K.

But statewide, black drivers in Missouri are still nearly twice as likely as others to be stopped.
A number of black Ferguson residents said they still very much fear being targeted by police because of their race.

Meanwhile, I met a longtime white Ferguson resident who told me, on camera, that she can tell the race of driver by the way they navigate the roads.

Five years ago today, two bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Three people died, and hundreds were injured. Later that week, all hell broke loose in the Boston area. We still don't know who built the bombs.
In 2015, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was found guilty of bombing the marathon and killing an MIT police officer. He was sentenced to death. The FBI seems to have moved on. But key facts in the case are missing. This is a thread about the loose ends.
The bombings happened on Marathon Monday, April 15, 2013, at around 2:50pm. For days, the government wouldn't say anything about whether it had suspects. Then, on Thursday April 18, at around 5:20pm, the FBI released photos of its suspects.
