INVESTIGATION:
What's going on with abattoirs in Australia?

King Island, wants a $50 million abattoir bcuz it costs $120 to ship beasts to mainland for slaughter

Owners JBS, shut the old abattoir in 2012

Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a boat?

Now, JBS is a big Brazilian Corporation also known in Australia as Meatworks

They want to build an abattoir in Victoria at Gillieston

Even tho abattoirs are doing it tough in the drought, they can't get staff & are closing down all over Aust

JBS/Meatworks seems to move in, take over, put other abattoirs out of operation, then get state govt subsidies to absorb the workforce that they forced out of a job or shut it down completely & move on

They got $1.2 mill in QLD to absorb staff

Tasmania - JBS shuts down Longford's abattoir

The drought is making it tough & even when drought-breaking rains come, breeding stock will have to be built-up again that means less beasts for slaughter & more tough times for abattoirs

QLD- John Dee Abattoir in @D_LittleproudMP's electorate scored $4.8 million in govt funding for an 'on site cold storage facility'

So, if times are so tough, why are they expanding? Is it just bcuz they can get taxpayer grants? Is that viable?

QLD - Josie & Blair Angus of Signature Onfarm P/L scored a $5.5 million grant & a $25 mill NAIF loan for a 'boutique abattoir & on-farm village' even though they've never owned or run an abattoir before.

But they do own 30-40K head of cattle

MP for Capricornia, @mlandryMP lobbied hard for the Angus' abattoir

Josie Angus is the cousin of LNP State Candidate for Whitsunday, Amanda Camm (Dep Mayor of Mackay).

It is believed that Landry is Camm's cousin. Can anyone confirm that?

A bit cosy 'eh?

Even though the Angus' are dyed-in-the-wool LNP supporters, they're still happy to accept grants from the QLD @AnnastaciaMP Govt to fund their abattoir staff

The project value was originally about $25 mill, now that's gone up to $37-odd million

So, it appears to me that:

-Abattoirs are winning massive state or federal govt grants to help build new abattoirs/upgrades/staffing

-Despite the drought & tough times & abattoirs closing down, new abattoirs are winning govt grants & are being built🤔
🐝
#auspol
- Abattoirs seems to get federal funding to build the abattoir & state funding to staff it

- The 'drought' doesn't seem to be a factor when determining whether a new abattoir will be approved

- 'Jobs' are always the politician's excuse to build yet another abattoir

- Abattoirs are always advertising for workers & appear to have trouble staffing their operations & use a predominately TSS workforce (Temporary Skills Shortage visas)

- Working in an abattoir is a low-paid, long hours, difficult, disgusting job that few can stomach
🐝

- Asylum seekers who arrive by plane & are being processed (often takes years) often work in abattoirs, they usually have little choice

- Abattoirs don't seem to be a viable business & do not seem to be able to operate without significant federal & state assistance
🐝
#auspol
- Abattoir staff are often deported after a few years after their claims are processed & refused - eg - #hometobilo

- A merry-go-round of abattoirs - funding from federal & state govts - a transient, possibly exploited workforce - shut-downs - new abattoirs built🤔

-I reckon if Holden was an abattoir it'd still be running, why do some industries get so much help from govt & others are allowed to fall by the wayside?

-For the amount of govt investment, there's a VERY small return in real jobs for rural & remote Australia🤔

Farmers usually get abt $3-$5kg per beast, we pay abt $15-$30+ per kg for meat, export pays way more

-All this doesn't add-up

-Abattoirs SHOULD be viable based on those prices

-Yet abattoirs get so many govt handouts

-Where are all the jobs promised by politicians?
🐝
#auspol
It just doesn't add up to me, someone is getting very rich at the expense of farmers & workers & the taxpayer keeps picking up the tab - what's going on?

This is an ongoing investigation, so if you've got any tips about abattoirs in your area, please let me know.
