Emadi is taking this action after he was given all of the Abrams’ campaign’s financial documents when he demanded them via a spate of subpoenas this spring in his first act as commissioner. Why is he taking the Abrams campaign to court a year after the election? 2/8
Because he is demanding campaign communications that are irrelevant to his bogus and politically motivated investigation. However, there is no precedent or legal justification for a political patron of a sitting governor to demand all of an opponent’s campaign communications 3/8
based on accusations seemingly made up out of thin air. Why are we fighting back? An “ethics” chief should not be allowed to seize private communications from the political rival of a man he helped put in office, with no stated rationale or evidence for doing so. 4/8
He should not be able to make those documents available to his political master during or after a campaign. Worse, if civic organizations that engage voters of color are made victims of retribution by a governor who presided over his own election 5/8
and silenced the voices of those same voters, the State of Georgia would resemble a Jim Crow-style Banana Republic. Make no mistake: The communications that Brian Kemp’s donor is demanding are unremarkable — but principle must matter. 6/8
The campaign already provided thousands of pages of financial records, allowed two days of conspiracy-inspired document inspection, and answered every question posed in this bizarre, time-wasting, tree-killing, and power-abusing nonsense of a nothingburger. 7/8
But we cannot and will not allow a political vendetta to jeopardize the communications of every future candidate for every office to be subject to Brian Kemp’s fishing expeditions. 8/8
