Glenn, this is a bad take.

Yang’s proposed solutions to an AI dystopian future are neither “smart, thoughtful” nor anything anyone remotely on the left should support. (thread 1/9)
His vision is premised on the inevitability of the current status quo relationship between technology & humanity: that a small handful of elites & CEOs will continue to shape, control & reap the lion’s share of benefit from technology. 2/9
In fact, even part of his rhetoric around his “freedom dividend” assumes many of us will be obsolete by technologies such as AI precisely because such technologies will continue to be shaped, controlled & for the benefit of elites & CEOs. 3/9
But the left has a very different vision for the relationship between technology & humanity: one where technology is not shaped, controlled & for the primary benefit of elites, but rather a vision where technology is open, transparent, democratized & benefits all humanity. 4/9
In our vision, technologies such as AI are completely open-source & transparent. Workplaces are democratically run by workers & thus technologies are not used against workers but rather shaped by workers for the benefit of all. 5/9
For a fuller discussion on left vision on technology please see this thread: 6/9

Yang’s assumption is that we must accept our wretched fate of being powerless, dispensable & obsolete by tech.
Those of us on the left instead demand complete transparency & democratization of technology so that technology can be used for humanity, rather than against it. 7/9
Plans like @BernieSanders’ Corporate Accountability and Democracy - that actually give workers a real voice & seat at the table will do far, far more to mitigate the worst of AI & technology controlled by elites & CEOs. 8/9
@BernieSanders In comparison to Yang’s plan to change nothing structurally, the Corporate Accountability and Democracy plan sets a trajectory towards a more democratic, participatory & equitable future, including technology controlled by us - not the other way around. 9/9
