I just learnt yesterday about the year 2 student of Unilorin who killed herself because she could no longer bear with her mum. Full details were not given. Bottom line was she felt her mum would change and not do the same to her siblings if she kills herself. #THREAD
/ As parents, we should be mindful of the standards we set for our kids and our attitudes when they miss those standards. We've failed at one point or another in our own lives and we should be more experienced at our level to know better than give up on our kids.
/ The society is more "brutal" today than it used to be and the high level of frustration and the low endurance capability is not just a new common trait among adults. It's like that with kids as well. Let's not offload our frustrations on them because we think they're powerless
/The words we speak to people who look up to us for affirmation are so powerful but most parents fail to realize this. We just vomit harsh and unwholesome words the way they are in our hearts because we feel we can say anything and get away with it.
/ Growing up, I failed many times. I was such a late & slow starter. My father never liked "it". But he still loved "me". He separated "me" from "it". What if he didn't? What if he judged me? What if he named me after my earlier performances. I would've been called "useless"
/ What if my parents had abandoned me due to the comparatively slow pace at which I was moving? Or how I wasn't measuring up with other "bright" kids in the neighborhood? "Today" would've proven them wrong, but still, my personality and perception of life would've been injured.
/ If we push our kids into depression, they may develop a sickness or contemplate suicide as an easy way of escape. So let's be patient & treat them with respect as full humans. Let's help them go through their own journey without being unnecessarily judgemental. END OF THREAD
