Whenever someone says “just get Brexit done”, we should hear a klaxon.

The “evidence” is the claim that Johnson struck a new deal with the EU in weeks.

He didn’t. He got a revision to the Withdrawal Agreement largely negotiated under May.

Important to bear in mind when looking at details of NHS privatisation or private sector participation in NHS activities

— the UK’s commitments in the WTO (via the EU’s commitments) allow international competition *in areas where private sector participation is allowed*.

1. Only the Tories have a trade policy but it is both vague (“free trade”) and impossibly ambitious—trade agreements covering 80% of UK trade in 3 yrs. And nothing on process (H/T @Brigid_Fowler) and consultation

2. Labour addresses patents and drug pricing through compulsory licensing.

3. Only Labour and Plaid Cymru are specific about a UK-EU trade relation post-Brexit (Single Market and Customs Union). Both also allow for remain, the LibDems’ and Greens’ position.

4. The Conservatives are vague on UK-EU trade. Only red lines: not single market or customs union, no role for ECJ. No indication of whether quick and shallow or deep and comprehensive, and how EU level playing-field demands would be handled.

I've been looking at back-of-envelope numbers for the Tory manifesto's "aim" to have free trade deals cover 80% of UK trade within 3 years👇🏽.

It's an extremely ambitious call

1. Total UK trade (goods+services) 2018 = £1,289 billion
2. Goods = 65%
3. 80% of total = £1,038bn

The Tories aim to have free trade deals cover £1,038bn of UK trade, more than UK goods trade alone.

4. A goods-only FTA with the EU would cover £545bn of that (smaller if regulations diverge but let's keep it simple), leaving just under £500bn to be covered by non-EU deals

5. Trade in goods with the US, Australia, NZ (mentioned in the manifesto) plus Canada, Japan & China totals about £150bn

Leaves £350bn more to meet the 80% target, even assuming a free trade in goods with China can be done in 3 years (no one thinks it can, even in 5-10 yrs)

Im hearing immense frustration EU-side. Not at Parliament. There is European understanding that they want to scrutinise legislation in more detail. Frustration is with the PM /2

EU views PMs letter accompanying his formal #Brexit extension request - saying that he doesn’t actually want an extension- as a gimmick aimed at a domestic audience. As far as EU law is concerned: a formal request from the UK prime minister, is a formal request full stop /1
EU leaders not rushing to make decisions. Instead they watch events in Westminster carefully. If their newly negotiated #Brexit deal is approved by the majority of MPs - as the PM promised them it would be - then possibly no extension will be needed OR /2
Only a short one maybe to allow for necessary legislation to be completed. If this is the case, EU leaders won’t think twice about granting this short extension. They may even approve it by writing rather than on person at an emergency #Brexit summit. Spoiler alert../3

What Angela Merkel did and did not say about #Brexit in the Bundestag@👇1) She did say the EU would be weakened after Brexit (but that it should seize the chance to become stronger spon.de/afyLo via @SPIEGELONLINE. /1
2) She did warn that - if #Brexit leads to a Singapore-on-Thames deregulated UK - that the EU could find itself with an economic competitor on its doorstep and that the bloc should aim to work with the U.K. after its departure /2
3)Merkel didn’t express herself as any more optimistic than before about getting a #Brexit deal. She said there’s every chance a deal will be found but EU should prepare itself for possibility of no deal.. Plus ca change as far as Merkel’s Brexit pronouncements are concerned /3

If Johnson does renegotiate a deal, there isn't much time to pass it. He would need to get the Withdrawal Agreement Bill (to implement the deal in UK law) through Parliament before ratification. If conference recess is scheduled as normal, only 22 sitting days 3 Sept-31 Oct

2/
If Johnson presses ahead with no deal then we know MPs will do all they can to stop it. Voting against principle of no deal -or disrupting govt legislative programme -cant stop it alone. MPs may try to pass leg forcing govt to act (either request A50 extension or revoke A50)

Little expectation in EU today that the Withdrawal Agreement will pass. Of it does, EU leaders would be mightily relieved. UK would then have till 22 May to sort out political declaration .. which can still be negotiated. Not legally binding /1
EU mood is one of resignation now. For first time this week a no deal #Brexit is being viewed and discussed as a v real possibility. Rather than a distant, unlikely prospect /2
At yesterday’s meeting of ambassadors of the 27 EU countries, I’m told diplomats tackled ‘hot potato’ EU issues head-on that they preferred to avoid before as long as no deal seemed so unlikely /3
