EU source rejects the PMs assertion in Parliament just now that the ball is back in the EUs court now (regarding extension etc). EU leaders say they wait to hear from Boris Johnson as to what his next steps are /1
Im hearing immense frustration EU-side. Not at Parliament. There is European understanding that they want to scrutinise legislation in more detail. Frustration is with the PM /2
EU diplomat from influential member state said to me: “What game is being played here? Boris Johnson tells us, tells everyone he just wants to get #Brexit done. But now he halts the legislative process with 10 days till the deadline still to go.” /3

When supporters of Boris Johnson say: he achieved what so many claimed was impossible: he got EU to renegotiate #Brexit deal therefore he can also get an EU trade deal done by December next year although many say unlikely .. It’s important to remember the red line PM crossed.. /1
He didn’t get the new Brexit deal by bullying/impressing/charming the EU. He got it by agreeing to protect their single market on island of Ireland after Brexit by putting a customs border down the Irish Sea. Allowing a ‘division’ between NIreland + GB he’d pledged never to do /2
Of course the EU also engaged with Boris Johnson because they believed that he - as a political figure - had a better chance of selling a deal back home to MPs than Theresa May ever had - BUT have a chat in EU circles .. /3

Surely the diplomat is being unfair, you say. Listen to Michel Barnier and incoming trade commissioner Phil Hogan. They say a deal can be done quickly. The U.K. currently shares EU rules and regulations. How difficult can it be to strip them away to a basic FTA, you say..BUT /2
If Johnson wins a majority in this election and takes U.K. out of EU in Jan, then Brussels is preparing to offer him a quick FTA but with the utmost levels of EU regulation bells and whistles attached (so-called level playing field provisions) /3

The European Commission has started infringement proceedings against the UK for not nominating a new EU Commissioner - as instructed to do by EU leaders - even if the UK only remains in the bloc till end of Jan /1
The Johnson government had said it was unable under UK law to nominate a new Commissioner because the UK was in the lead-up to general elex but European Commission pointed out that -as EU member, EU law trumps domestic law. The Commission is the ‘guardian of EU laws’ /2
The Commission says UK must nominate a UK Commissioner so that the new Commission under Ursula von der Leyen, (rather than Jean Claude Juncker whose Commission is outgoing after 5 years)- can start work. Ms von der Leyen should have taken office on 1 Nov BUT /4

Last week me & others objected to parts of the British press pushing the idea that Juncker was "ruling out" an extension. Reasons: 1/ by law he can't & 2/ this spin was on by No10, in a bid to push the deal through parlt. Now that's failed, let's see what this extension is about
Jan. 31 2020 is the date laid out in the Benn Act. The EU does not want to come up with its own new deadline. Shorter than 3 months wd be seen as helping Boris. Longer, as trying to help Remainers by backing a 2nd referendum. So they are likely to take the date the parlt passed

Everyone waits for the Queen in the Lords. Because she has the best seat.

There is a murmuration from the Lords and politicians, like you get in break time during a conference at a bad hotel.
The murmuring drops briefly, as rumours of Brenda's entry surface.

They resume once people realise it is just someone passing the door to get a coffee.

Everyone goes back to discussing how uncomfortable the Lords robes are.
The Lords pass the time discussing how awks it is that they ALL decided to go with red-robe-and-fluffy-hood today.

While waiting for flight I thought I'd investigate the observation by @JohnJCrace and others that many Leavers who insisted #parliament prorogation was nowt to do with Brexit then decried yesterday's Supreme Court ruling to quash it as an attack against Brexit & democracy itself
Turns out there are hundreds of Twitter accounts who enacted this turnaround, unearthed by a simple search on the words "prorogued every year", as that's what they all said when Boris did it: "It happens every year don't it - as if it's got anything to do with Brexit this time!"
Let's start with @MarnieRiptide who once explained to @StevePeers & others that it's a yearly thing, specifically
for conferences/Queen's speech - "Do your research!"

But as of yesterday it was suddenly all about "postponing Brexit" and nothing else. What happened there Marny

Hunt has been on the attack: “I’m not entirely sure what he believes on this having listened to him last night.”
