On this basis leaving the EU and staying in permanent transition is as much Brexit as never having a deal with the EU again. Which I agree with as it happens. But does rather mean that Brexit is by definition blind to the future, which means it can't end uncertainty and division.
Today we have threads from @GeorgePeretzQC and @hhesterm on future problems with the EU relationship. I've done them as well. If the Conservatives win it sets the UK up for many more years of uncertainty.
@GeorgePeretzQC @hhesterm To be fair to @DanielJHannan he has long favoured and I think still does a close relationship based on EEA or Swiss relations with the EU. It isn't a widely held view in his party, as his original Euroscepticism wasn't in 1990. Getting there still looks a tough ask.

Boris Johnson has made three promises on a US trade deal - to sign a good deal by 2022, to take the NHS off the table, and not to adopt US food standards. The realities of US trade deals means keeping all three is extremely unlikely. So which promise will be broken?
Interesting to note that the Conservative Party response to the leak of documents has been to double down the denials even in the face of evidence. No suggestion whatsoever of negotiating realities or transparency. This should be a serious concern.
Ask the DUP if Boris Johnson can be trusted to keep his promises in an international negotiation.

(and here's the thing, the bluster and denial stops serious discussion. might work for a while. won't work for long)

I picked the wrong morning for meetings but my quick reaction is as before - of course the NHS could be included in trade deals and the Conservatives response on this (as on food standards) has been unconvincing.
We need a commitment to transparency and scrutiny of trade deals. We don't yet have any such thing, and until we do, suspicion of trade deals will continue. No 'off the table' type language works without a commitment to scrutiny.
Even from these quick peeks it looks like the Government may well have lied about UK US trade talks. This is a big deal, or at least should be.

I've joined a group of UK trade specialists in calling for future UK trade negotiations including with the EU to prioritise content over timing; hold transparent consultations with the public; and establish an independent arbiter, equivalent to the OBR telegraph.co.uk/business/2019/…
We conclude "If the UK wants to benefit from high quality trade deals and lead on the global stage, a major shift in approach is required. It’s time to get serious."

I can't speak for the others but I'm not optimistic that this will happen in the short-term

EU leaders must now agree on whether to grant the UK another Brexit extension and if so: how long for. Don't forget every country has a veto on this. But after speaking extensively to EU diplomats and politicians, the consensus EU-side seems to be to say yes /2
The EU's decision is expected by the end of the week. You can expect a lot of EU grumbling beforehand. France's Europe Minister was unsurprisingly (France has settled into role of "Brexit Bad Cop") one of first to speak on the record last night. She noted that.. /3

EU watching Westminster closely this week but not rushing to any
conclusions. Here is some of the key thinking in European capitals on
the main #Brexit issues of the day: /1
On Labour/second referendum: Corbyn seen in Europe as convinced
eurosceptic so EU is sceptical of his backing a second referendum. EU
has watched #Brexit turmoil long enough to see huge complications in
holding the vote and realise many leave voters have changed their
mind. /2
Of course EU would still rather UK stayed but Europe's leaders don't
see this as realistically on the cards right now. Most realistic,
considering turmoil in Westminster, says EU council President Tusk:
would be to extend article 50 leaving process. /3

1) Thread - All Brexits are bad and what we voted for
It's often said by brexiters that "it's not all about economics"
However, the *actual* Leave campaign was almost wholly about economic arguments

With the leak of this 2-8% report those arguments are now trashed
2) We seem to have forgotten this however economics played a huge part in the Vote Leave campaign, making up over 2/3rds of the primary arguements. The clear message was we would at the least be no worse off and at best much better off. 4 of the 6 below state this clearly
3) & the fact is voters believed we would be no worse off. People prioritized immigration certainly, but against a backdrop of there being no consequences from Brexit - few are prepared to actually pay for ending FoM
