THREAD: America continues to stand with Hong Kong and their fight to obtain freedom, democracy, and the right to self-governance.
After several months of protests and growing violence, the people of Hong Kong were finally heard when they cast their ballots giving pro-democracy candidates a sweeping majority of 389 of 452 elected seats. This strong ember of democracy is one that we must continue to stoke.
I am proud to have voted in support of the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019, which holds Hong Kong accountable to ensure that voters were able to freely enjoy the right to elect their officials by universal suffrage.
I applaud the people of Hong Kong and will continue to work with my colleagues to protect Hong Kong’s voice from authoritarian regimes like China that continue to stifle democracy and suppress human rights.
