Diversity Is Our Strength?

1) Most Canadians have heard Trudeau and other Liberals use the phrase "diversity is our strength", but who else has used it?
2) We need look no further than the Conservative Party. They sort of chopped it up to create a little differentiation, but it's still there. Who else?
3) This phrase seems to pop up all over the place. Here's House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sounding off.
4) It was used to describe France's soccer team in 2018.
5) It's been used in the UK, as shown here from 2017.
6) It was used by a UN Representative in 2017 in Guyana.
7) This 2016 article from Australia talks about 'Harmony Day'.
8) Here's another example of the UN using it.
9) Of course, Bloomberg would use it as well.
10) The European Union has had a version of it ("Unity Through Diversity") as its motto since 2000.
11) It seems to be a general phrase for all of Europe.
12) So just how far back does this go? This article from New Zealand dates back to 2008.
13) A Newsweek article from 2005 mentions it.
14) This 2014 article talks about how the phrase was proposed to be a part of a Toronto-based coat of arms in 1998.
15) Bill Clinton spoke of diversity being America's strength in his State of the Union address in 1997.
16) Strength through diversity was the theme of this Education Week article from 1995.
17) The UN's Human Development Report in 1994 spoke of diversity being our strength.
18) Bill Clinton spoke of strength through diversity at a White House breakfast meeting in 1993.
19) This Congressional Subcommittee report from 1985 talks about it.
20) Another Congressional Subcommittee report from 1980 talks about strength through diversity.
21) In 1975, Gerald Ford said that diversity is the Philippines' greatest strength at a State dinner in Manila.
22) A 1970 report from the New York State Department of Education spoke about diversity being their strength.
23) LBJ wrote about diversity in 1964, but didn't relate it to it being the source of American strength. There doesn't seem to be much on it before the mid 1960's, but these examples are not off-the-cuff remarks. It is a key message by officials within top government positions.
24) There are a couple of conclusions that we can draw from these examples.
1) "Diversity Is Our Strength" is not a new phrase and it has existed for over 50 years.
2) This phrase has been consistently used by world leaders and the UN on a global scale.
25) It sounds nice, but does it actually mean anything? This is what it reminds me of. What do you think?
