The term "fake news" was first used by journalists to discredit the election of Donald Trump, as if Americans were too stupid to realize funny memes on Facebook weren't reality.

Trump then turned the term back on the media, which often spreads hoaxes and misinformation.
The New York Times Editorial Board also forgets to mention that CNN President Jeff Zucker—who supposedly takes offense to the term—likes to attack rival Fox News as "fake news."
