#UPISecurityIssue A friend send me money via @PhonePe_ , and it went to my @FederalBankLtd account which is inactive for last 4-5 years! 1/n
@PhonePe_ @FederalBankLtd That @FederalBankLtd account doesn't even have mobile / internet banking features. I have never used @PhonePe_ in my life, but phone pay shows that my number is linked to this bank and created a UPI code "automatically" !! 2/n
@PhonePe_ @FederalBankLtd Her version is that - she searched my phone number, it showed a "valid UPI" and my full name. The money came to @FederalBankLtd account, but I have never made a UPI. In fact, it's asking me for KYC since the account was idle for years. I feel so scared about @NPCI_BHIM now 3/n
@PhonePe_ @FederalBankLtd @NPCI_BHIM @NPCI_BHIM , @UPI_NPCI - does it mean that an app if it can find a linked bank account details from a phone number, it can generate an idle UPI id, and show it to customers, thus forcing the bank customer to use the app? 4/n
@PhonePe_ @FederalBankLtd @NPCI_BHIM I have never changed my phone number, and yes, the money is safe @FederalBankLtd. But how can @PhonePe_ create a UPI account on my name, automatically linking to this bank account without my awareness?
@PhonePe_ @FederalBankLtd @NPCI_BHIM @UPI_NPCI @PhonePe_ is claiming that I was already a user, and had installed the app. I won't ever link that to a bank account that I am not using which has a balance of Rs.0.02 before this transaction. And it doesn't have UPI PIN, (to create that, I need to do KYC) 5/n
@PhonePe_ @FederalBankLtd @NPCI_BHIM @UPI_NPCI And the solution @PhonePe_ recommending is to ask that friend to go and talk to her bank and cancel the transaction. MY QUESTION IS NOT ABOUT THE TRANSACTION, it's about that #UPI id created on my behalf without my knowledge!! @UPI_NPCI @RBI 6/n
@PhonePe_ @FederalBankLtd @NPCI_BHIM @UPI_NPCI @RBI She did the transaction on 29th, and I received the SMS from federal bank, that's how I came to know about it. And when I tried to install @PhonePe_ it asked me to "register", and now they are saying that I am an existing user!
@PhonePe_ @FederalBankLtd @NPCI_BHIM @UPI_NPCI @RBI Conclusion - @UPI_NPCI , @NPCI_BHIM - People uses the same number for years, and they might have accounts that are idle - does BHIM provides apps or banks with the authority to "generate" a UPI code without user permission and claim it as a valid one? n/n
@PhonePe_ @FederalBankLtd @NPCI_BHIM @UPI_NPCI @RBI Are you someone who never used @PhonePe_ ? I need a favour. Ask your friends to check if #PhonePe is showing any UPI ID linked to your phone number, and check if it's automatically generated by PhonePe without your knowledge.
