There's no point in investing 50% of your money in saving the climate and the other 50% in destroying it.

So says Dr. Werner Hoyer, CEO of the @EIB at an exchange of views with the @EP_Environment.
@EIB @EP_Environment @GraceOSllvn Excellent questions by @michabl on the revision of next sectoral lending policies of the @EIB and the potentially big loopholes around 'low carbon gases', CCS and the 4th PCI list.
@EIB @EP_Environment @GraceOSllvn @michabl Now an Italian MEP for the ID Group is saying that climate financing by the @EIB is creating a bubble and is defending the interests of big interests, rather than protecting citizens.

🤨
@EIB @EP_Environment @GraceOSllvn @michabl .@JuttaPaulusRLP reminding everyone in the room that there's a biodiversity crisis as well as a climate crisis.

How can the @EIB support projects and investments to tackle biodiversity loss?
@EIB @EP_Environment @GraceOSllvn @michabl @JuttaPaulusRLP .@wallacemick asks the @EIB to clarify which fossil fuel projects it will fund after 2021, eg will it fund the Shannon LNG project?

The @EU_Commission is working on sustainable finance taxonomy with a much lower emissions performance standard (100gCO2/kWh) than the @EIB. Why?
@EIB @EP_Environment @GraceOSllvn @michabl @JuttaPaulusRLP @wallacemick @EU_Commission Now Werner Hoyer of @EIB is responding:

Some of the EIB's most impactful investments have been outside the EU, eg mobiles leapfrogging landlines. But they're limited to 10% of lending outside EU. The migration crisis has woken Europe up to the importance of development lending.
@EIB @EP_Environment @GraceOSllvn @michabl @JuttaPaulusRLP @wallacemick @EU_Commission Werner Hoyer of @EIB: it's irresponsible banking to invest in an asset that has a lifespan of 40 years that you know will have to be written off in 15 years.

It's the taxpayer who ends up paying the bill of these stranded assets.
@EIB @EP_Environment @GraceOSllvn @michabl @JuttaPaulusRLP @wallacemick @EU_Commission Werner Hoyer of @EIB's answer on the biodiversity crisis: reforestation, agriculture and oceans are all important and they will go to the CBD in China next year with a lot of ambition.
@EIB @EP_Environment @GraceOSllvn @michabl @JuttaPaulusRLP @wallacemick @EU_Commission Oh dear @AMcDowell isn't off to a good start referring to #renewables as intermittent. They're not, they are variable which means they are predictable.

He says gas can only be funded in the future in 3 ways:
1) combined heat and power
2) green gases
3) carbon capture and storage
@EIB @EP_Environment @GraceOSllvn @michabl @JuttaPaulusRLP @wallacemick @EU_Commission @AMcDowell .@AMcDowell: efficiency has been a very overlooked element of the @EIB's energy lending policy.

They will also have to look at the embodied energy in building projects.

Et voilà, c'est fini.
