For as absurd as it sounds, this isn't an unreasonable policy. While I knew he was facing a terminal illness I have nothing but an extended relative's word, and it's not inconceivable that someone would fake death to avoid deportation

Post-mortem deportations probably happen all of the time, and strictly speaking there's nothing really *wrong* with just letting the order enter. It's just a final indignity from a system which already imposes so many of them, and I won't ever let it happen if I have the choice.
