Today I wound up talking to a nurse who is in favour of privatizing health care in Alberta. "Because then," she said, "at least those who could afford it could get hip and knee replacements faster." #abhealth #ableg 1/4
I asked, "What about those who can't afford it?" She shrugged. She also felt medical staff might be better paid and have more benefits working for a for-profit health corporation. They would have to compete to keep staff, you see... 2/4
I would be very interested in seeing how nurses and other healthcare staff are treated by for-profit companies in the US. I can't imagine non-unionized nurses doing better working for a corporation whose purpose is to generate profit, but I don't have much information. 3/4
Still, it astonishes me how deeply ingrained the right-wing philosophy is in Alberta, even among those in the "caring professions". 4/4

@dinnerwithjulie URGENT QUESTION! I made an exotic fruitcake. It has the candied cherries and raisins and walnuts, but it also has dried apricots, blueberries, cranberries, macadamia nuts... and other delights. The fruit soaked in plum brandy for a week before I made the cake. 1/
I made the cake in November, in a bundt pan. It has been basted with plum brandy. I have these weird tubes of marzipan they sell now. I need to know how to apply it to the cake without the stiff marzipan just tearing the booze-soaked cake apart. 2/
Pieces of it need to go through the mail to family across the country. I wonder if I can roll it out and wrap the cake and press it into the angles? A friend suggested melting it and drizzling it over. But the recipe she sent said the marzipan would be good for 24 hours after 3/

I have been busy. Christmas is a very busy time for me. I bake. I bake vast quantities of goodies that I send out to family and friends across the country. It's a tradition. This is the first year, though, that I haven't had any help because my kids are elsewhere. #cdnpoli 1/10
And I do the gift shopping. And get the house ready. And this is on top of all the regular things I do. And so, this year, I have been less active on social media, less of a news junkie than usual, for the past couple of weeks. 2/10

It is becoming clearer to me that there are two ways people approach information. There are those that look at the evidence and, even if it does not suit the way they would like things to be, if the facts are compelling, they say, "Yeah, ok. I guess that's right." #cdnpoli 1/25
And then there are those who will look at an evidence-based statement, decide it doesn't fit their world-view, and refuse to look at any evidence. They set about trying to silence the conclusions. 2/25

Pretty much all of it.

While all eyes are on companies like Virgin thinking they are the threat the NHS itself has been broken up into over 500 ‘provider bodies’ which are a mix of the arms’ length public interest companies, private and voluntary sectors. 1/
The ‘NHS’ Foundation Trusts are companies which run subsidiary companies and compete with one another for contracts and sub-contract to the private sector for ‘extra capacity’. 2/
