What Irin said. And the idea that McKinsey would sue Buttigieg for violating his NDA in the course of his run for president is self-evidently preposterous. It's laughable.
As Irin suggests, sometimes breaking an NDA is the right and moral thing to do—sometimes it's not, of course, but often it is. So if Buttigieg's position is that it would be immoral to break his McKinsey NDA, he should say that, rather than that he can't. He absolutely can.
But as we see here, his campaign's position isn't that it would be immoral to break the NDA, but that he'd get sued if he did—and that he can't afford to risk the resulting legal bills.
Buttigieg's people say they're working with McKinsey on getting him out of the NDA. If that happens soon and cleanly, and there are no skeletons in that closet, this'll all blow over quickly. But everything has to come out.
