An interesting development: confirming austerity as the complete bullshit it always was.

But those my thoughts are with right now are those on universal credit, those who've been sanctioned, the disabled denied PIP, the million plus needing foodbanks.

Nothing will be done for them. Nothing whatsoever. "We are the party of working people" means if you're not a working person because you've either lost your job or your business has failed or you can't find a job or are too sick or disabled, to the Tories, you are worthless.
And in any case: I'll believe this investment when I see it. Especially with hard Brexit likely to wreck the economy.

THREAD: Progressive alliance. I've mentioned this a few times over the last few days - and first did so in 2015. I am quite convinced it is the way to go. The UK needs plural, representative, fair, democratic politics - and under FPTP, it ain't getting it.
Because of FPTP, what it gets instead is:

- Divisive, destructive policy
- Unrepresentative government
- Rotten boroughs galore, leading to corruption and the expenses scandal
- A Union that is breaking apart
- A supposed mandate for hard Brexit which isn't one at all
And it also gets so-called progressive parties ripping each other to shreds and letting the Tory in again and again and again. This year, most hideously of all in Kensington. It's an absolute disgrace.

I did my abortive PhD on 1820s Britain. My God it was boring; I dread to think how many years of my life I wasted on something I never even finished.

But something about that period is being repeated now, which is why the thread below is well worth your time.
The thing about the first 30 years of the nineteenth century in Britain was: society was changing rapidly. The industrial revolution; the rise of a rentier middle class. But Parliament did not represent this at all.
The popular press emerged too, giving voice to the middle class... while Parliament was paralysed for decades.

After the 1801 Act of Union subsumed Ireland, the key question was that of Catholic emancipation. The King believed his coronation oath could not allow it.

And now for a rather bleak thread. Something that's back playing on my mind now, just as it was in 2016 - when I first concluded it. Read on... if you dare.
In 2016, the weekend before the referendum, I very nearly wrote an article which had been sitting in my head for months. Its thesis would have been:

"Whatever happens on Thursday, whether Leave win or Remain win, everything is screwed. Forever".
Why was I thinking that?

1. Because it was obvious Leave would do horrendous damage to the economy and to social attitudes

2. Because it was obvious Remain would make no tangible positive difference, and that the EU was unreformable

Why not just go speak to the Grand Jury? Clearly, it's not about avoiding spending more time talking about the investigation and your experience...

He can't help himself..
