In light of NSW 🔥 and 🇬🇧 election, I have been thinking about climate policy, and how the progressive left and the @AustralianLabor can better lead the agenda and avoid getting wedged. #auspol #ClimateEmergency 1/
I think there is a benefit in focusing on key principles/ meta-policies rather than the specifics of given policies - arguing 46% v 27% just won't cut it, and responses to Adani etc keeps everyone unhappy
I suggest the basic principles:

1) given the scale of the issue - every action that will address climate change should be presumptively supported;

2) Addressing climate change will be collective effort, & a key role of government will be to support the those adversely affected
3) climate abatement will present new economic opportunities, & the sooner we move the better these will be.

Three basic principles.

But the implications can be profound & inclusive - & done well can both take the teeth out of the debate and provide leadership from opposition
The first principle is a genuine embrace of bipartisanship. It signals the recognition of the extent of the threat - Rudd was done as soon as he walked away from the 'challenge of the generation'.
It will signal that the left thinks this is so important it will not look at to score political points. This act of discipline is powerful though, as it robs the teeth from any attempt to wedge. Say yes to gov policies, and invite them to say yes to yours
No 2 helps to create a national collective effort, and can even help to bridge the urban/rural divided. Paper straws and reusable bag won't make a jot of real difference, rather create a narrative whereby a small inconvenience in the city supports huge change in country
There is an apitite for climate signalling that can be embraced to collectivise the cost/pain of abatement.

Again, the focus here is on the principle not specific policy - the role of government will be to facilitate/support this redistribution, not to "back winners"
No 3 celebrates the national entrepreneurial spirit - this is the opportunity to reimagine the economy for the 21st century. Investing in 'green jobs' is about creating economic sustainability.

Paint it as an opportunity for synergy between economic and environmental interests
Taken together, these principles become a powerful tool for changing the narrative around climate policy. Take the #ClimateEmergency as a given - no need to argue about it. Treat it as a matter requiring effective government of national Unity.
Lead that form, and the effective counter wedge it creates - but show it by avoiding cheap polical pointscoring.

Recognise the fear and uncertainties of those who may be adversely affected, and don't demonise others. Rather reach out with support for the transition
The allows and inclusive approach that can help get changes started now (even if it looks like allowing Gov credit) - but if left drive the embrace of these pragmatic principles it is likely to reap long term electoral advantage.
Anyway, there ends my Sunday morning rumination. Good luck everyone with the week of 40+ weather sweeping the nation this week
