Demographics of Assam with a Historical Background

Kamrupa (ancient name of Assam) was the place where Mahadev burnt Kamdev to ashes for interrupting his meditation. This was also the place where battle between Kamrupa king Narakasura and Krishna took place. #Thread1
Kamrupa king Banasur’s daughter Usha was married to Krishna’s grandson Anniruddha.

When did Muslim settlements in Assam really begin? It was the year 1206 when Bakhtiyar Khilji attaked Assam with a huge army. He was badly defeated by the ruler of Assam Raja Prithu. #Thread2
Bakhtiyar Khilji fled Assam with only few surviving soldiers. Few of Khilji’s soldiers were taken prisoners of war. Raja Prithu pardoned them when they sought pardon. He also allowed them to stay when they sought shelter. #Thread3
The Muslims over time assimilated themselves into the Assamese culture. They dressed like Assamese and often celebrated the Hindu festivals. At the 1st or 2nd glance no one could recognize them to be Muslims until they uttered their names. They lived in complete harmony. #Thread4
Over time, there has been several Islamic invasions, but the Assamese and the tribes together resisted bravely and defeated every invader. Worth mentioning was Ahom commander Lachit Barphukan who defeated Aurangzeb’s Mughal forces. #Thread5
Part of the areas of later East Pakistan and today’s Bangladesh were part of Bengal and Assam before Independence. In 1937, Muslim League had flooded Assam with immigrants from present day Bangladesh. Muslim League was holding reins then. #Thread6
In 1938 Subhash Chandra Bose visited Assam and with the help of Gopinath Bordoloi dealt with the situation. Had they not intervened and controlled the situation, major areas of Assam would have ceded with Pakistan. Gopinath Bordoloi and Netaji Bose saved Assam. #Thread7
After Independence, situation was a bit under control, but soon illegal infiltration started. Most of the Kachari tribal people (they have a connection with the Mahabharata) had to flee inland from the Cachar region. #Thread8
Demographics started changing rapidly in Assam with infiltrators gradually in majority in lower regions. Assam shares 263 km of border with Bangladesh.

Unusual rise in voters was witnessed in 1979 in Mangaldoi Lok Sabha bypoll. Mangaldoi is located 68 km from Guwahati. #Thread9
It was because illegal Bangladeshi immigrants filled up space; were given voting rights. How they got voting rights? That’s a question which then ruling party shud answer. It led to massive agitation by Assamese for 6+ yrs leading 2 death of 885 people, mostly students #Thread10
The agitation stopped after the Assam Accord was signed in 1985. As per Assam Accord, date of detection and deportation of foreigners was fixed at March 25 1971. It was 1951 for other states. In CAA, the cut-off date is 2014. #Thread11
The reason why Assam is protesting is because the Assam Accord wasn’t implemented by subsequent ruling parties and while cut-off date in Assam Accord is 1971, in CAA it is 2014.

HS Brahma Committee Report on 2011 census gives us startling revelations. #Thread12
Here is the report👇. Brahma, retired IAS officer - 1975 Andhra Pradesh cadre batch, served as 19th Chief Election Commissioner of India.

Illegal infiltration is a major issue. This needs to be taken care of.
