The law doesn’t distinguish between direct and circumstantial evidence.
Usually there isn't direct evidence because most people don't commit crimes on camera or confess.

If a person is holding a smoking gun, and another person is dead on the floor, we assume that the person with the gun shot the dead person — unless there's a compelling reason, backed up with facts, to believe otherwise.

They say the evidence we have isn't enough to prove a crime.
