Some mapping over the holidays, didn't manage any on Christmas Day, but for for my first day's mapping: We've been tracking the old bank that's been turned into a restaurant, the note was updated a few days ago with the new name: Image
Their website, says coming soon but the facebook page indicates they are open, so I've updated the map to add the name. Because we keep the old node from the bank, I just need to update the tagging Image
We'll keep this note open, as we still need to add Opening times, and the planning permission indicated an extension so this also needs to be added.
Our Second bit of mapping is in Dunbar, on the East Coast, about 30 miles east of Edinburgh and 30 miles from the English border, it's also famous as the birthplace of John Muir. Image
Which is how an exchange from @Dunbar_Bear with our national mapping agency caught our attention. Image
Now we have already added the platform as it opened. But don't have the bear yet. Image
We we hadn't yet mapped @Dunbar_Bear himself. However we know approximately where he is. We can add the statue now and improve on the location over time. Hopefully this will help people find the bear! osm.org/go/ev1OKljap- Image
@Dunbar_Bear For our third season mapping we're in Stirling: Image
Looking at a shopping mall, the question is if the node(point) is a duplicate of the center itself or a marketplace inside the mall. I have been here, and don't remember any kind of marketplace. Therefor the node is a duplicate of the Center and can simply be removed. Image
So for the 4th day of mappyness; I'm going to talk about how we map buildings, and shops in Edinburgh. When we first started mapping, things were quite haphazard sometime we put shops/addresses to buildings, sometimes as individual points.
A few years ago, @mapping_edin project started systematically mapping Edinburgh. One of their objectives was for accurate geocoding. So developed the following convention for Edinburgh tenements. We map the building, then add a node with housenumber at the entrance.
We can then add shops/restaurants/pubs as nodes. This works well when one address may have multiple functions. One example is @Lyle_and_Scott on George Street which now also has a barbers and cafe in store. These are added as points. Image
@Lyle_and_Scott So for our 5th and catching up to 6th days mapping, two counter examples of of POI's. Or first is to add the the cafe at Edinburgh Printmakers. Here the multi node system works well as we add the Cafe as a distinct node in the same building as the printmakers. Image
Then for our 6th day of mapping. A cafe called Art and Vintage. The OSM rendering shows this cafe with a gallery symbol. But a visit from @donaldrnoble indicates that this is a cafe that also sells some arty stuff. Image
Now we don't tag for the render but by tagging this as all three there is no way for the renderer or indeed someone looking at the map from know what this is. We could spilt this into 3 nodes for each function, which would mean that all functions are indicated.
But I like to think about why you would visit somewhere. in the case of the Printmakers you might visit the printmakers or the cafe (or both). In this case you would likely visit the cafe and might end up with some art. Therefore we remove gallery and shop. Image
Interested to know if there are better ways of handling this? What mapping are you doing at the moment. #TwelveDaysOfMapping
The 7th day, today is Hogmany in Scotland. As it's the end of the year, it's a chance to look at issues left in our 2019 list. A few of us have been using a github issue tracker to track things that can't be mapped straight away. github.com/osm-scotland/m… Image
We then use milestones to group things by date. One of the categories is 2019 Review. We create Milestones for each quarter of the year. There are still lots of issues in our 2019 Review.
One is the opening of the new Sick Kids hospital. This should have happened in June, but is currently delayed until "Autumn 2020". Therefore I've moved this to the September 2020 Milestone. Image
One issue listed that can be closed is the opening of a new pub in Balerno, I've seen this talked about elsewhere and have confirmed via the pubs's location. So I can now close this issue, and note. ImageImage
The link to the 2019 Review list is at github.com/osm-scotland/m… I think most of these will need to be pushed to next year, but will work throuygh these over the next week,
Happy New Year, today is our 8th day of mapping. I've just seen that @pascal_n has published a new map of unmapped places. resultmaps.neis-one.org/unmapped#8/57.… Image
Now the good new is that these places are all looking mapped. The first is Easdale, which it turns out is actually very well mapped. It just doesn't have any roads! (except tracks) Image
The other 3 places are all up in Leòdhas or Lewis; are really just houses along a road so all the roads are mapped. This specific example is Airidh a' Bhruaich Image
But I've taken this opportunity to map the building and driveways, as well as re-position the village node, closer to what looks like the center. Image
So this is a good tool to use for improving the map, and identifying places that may need mpre work. But working out exactly when a place is mapped or not mapped isn't a simple task,
