Thread: Labour's switch from soft Brexit to a second referendum with remain on the ballot did more to damage Labour than just alienate leave voters who wanted to leave the EU and felt they were entitled to see their vote carried out.
The switch in Brexit policy strengthened every line of attack against us and weakened us where we should have been strong: trust.

Corbyn is fearlessly honest. But when we switched to a second vote we made liars of our MPs and the triangulation made even remainers distrust us.
The Brexit policy switch also robbed us of our insurgency. Boris's rebelling against May meant he could cast himself as the man who was going to change Britian. While we became in the eyes of many the party that was defending the staus quo. No different from new Labour.

Thread: A lesson the next Labour leader must learn is that whatever it is it is not going to blow over. Our opponents in the Conservative party, the press and even the PLP will keep flinging whatever mud they can until it sticks and sometimes persistence is enough
In the run up to 2017 the leadership team ducked many issues just to survive until the end of the day. There are lots of conversations about long standing myths we need to start, that they avoided. I think this strategy was vindicated by the 2017 result.
One of the lessons I'm learning in my job is that if you don't deal with something properly it will come back to bite you in the ass later. After 2017 the leadership team had the space to go on the offensive but they never pushed the advantage and it cost us.

The coalition of interests that led to Tony Blair's and new Labour's electoral success is no longer possible. No Labour leader can duplicate that trick. It was a once in a life time deal.
As Labour leader, Blair was able to count on the support Labour's traditional power base in the formerly strong trade union, industrial areas of the North East and the Midlands, on votes in Scotland and Wales and working classes in cities.
From this base Blair could reach out and appeal to "aspiring" middle classes many of whom did well under Thatcher but were uncomfortable with increased poverty around them.

He was killed in #Iraq by a #US order and #Iran will hit the #US by Khamenei order.

That will drag a wider confrontation

#Iran #QassemSoleimani commander was due to visit #Turkey President Erdogan and had a visit scheduled to #Lebanon.

His trips were known for many. The assassination will not at all affect Iran military and operationally because no one is indispensable.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), led by Suleimani, was responsible for the deaths of more than 600 Americans in Iraq between 2003-2011, and countless more injured.

He was a chief architect behind Iran’s continuing reign of terror in the region

The powerful Iranian general Qassem Suleimani has been killed in a drone strike in the Iraqi capital in the early hours of Friday, according to Iraqi state television and three senior officials in Baghdad.
If confirmed, the assassination will amount to an extraordinary escalation in a cold war between Tehran and Washington, which has largely been directed on the Iranian side by Suleimani – one of the most influential figures in the Middle East for more than a decade.
Also believed dead is the deputy head of the Popular Mobilisation Units (PMUs) in Iraq, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandes, a close ally of Suleimani and one of the main arms of Iranian aegis in Iraq
