Gen. Mark Milley, Joint Chiefs chairman, just met w/ a small group of reporters in his Pentagon office. He defended decision to kill Soleimani, said the U.S. had "clear and unambiguous" intelligence that he was planning a stepped up "campaign of violence" against Americans. 1/
Milley, asked what made Iran's plans different now, said it was the "size, scale, scope" of what Soleimani and the Quds Force had planned. Milley said there was greater risk at this point in not acting than in taking out Soleimani. 2/
“Is their risk? Damn right there’s risk,” Milley said of possible Iranian reactions. “But we’re mitigating, and we think we’re taking appropriate mitigations.” 3/3
Footnote: Milley added that he said U.S. officials would be "culpably negligent" if they didn't respond to what they saw.

“The risk of inaction exceeded the risk of action,” he said.
