Cheap killer drones, cheap rockets in the hands of badly trained or unjustly guided operators are the new evil. America is actually lucky that the Iranians called the Iraqis (and therefore the Americans) before this round of missile strikes. And more bizarrely we watched them.
The problem is not sovereign states going at it, it is when those weapons are used by rogue actors to mimic or tweak state actions. For example ISIS could have easily fired rockets under cover of the Iran attack and killed Americans making it harder for both sides to walk back.
This is not to say that the U.S. is innocent of false flag events but there have been a number of unresolved attacks designed to drag Iran into a conflict. For example:
