Am perennially fascinated by the public's optimism/pessimism bias, and how it applies to politics. Quick thread follows.
As I've pointed out before, people in the UK are generally pretty happy - and getting happier. See for example this from @ONS wellbeing stats
Yet at the same time, they're pretty pessimistic about both the future and politics. If you ask people 'Are you satisfied with how the govt is running the country?', you have to go back to 1999ish to get a consistently positive answer ipsos.com/ipsos-mori/en-…
The recent figures, amid the whole Brexit paralysis thing, have been particularly dire on this.
Now @OpiniumResearch and @WeAreBrightBlue have done some research on people's attitudes towards the Tories, and found that - as you'd expect in such a cynical age - they're not really expecting that much.
They think they'll govern for the rich...
That most things will get worse...
And that they probably won't deliver everything they've promised.
They're also really clear that Brexit was the big issue, and that's what they associate the Tories with...
Other interesting though obvious findings - they really love the NHS and want more spent on it. And they care about social care and climate change.
You can read the full polling here brightblue.org.uk/immediate-publ…. But the interesting implication is that with expectations low and cynicism high, there's real potential here for a govt that really delivers on its priorities to outperform expectations...
