Ocean heat content in 2019 was the warmest on record by a sizable margin. Between 2018 and 2019 the oceans absorbed an amount of heat around four times larger than all the energy used by humans in the world. link.springer.com/article/10.100…
(For those numbers-inclined, global primary energy use is around 6.8 zettajoules, while the oceans added 25.6 zettajoules of heat between 2018 and 2019).
CORRECTION: The gain in ocean heat content between 2018 and 2019 is actually 44 times larger than human primary energy use, not 4 times. I misread the primary energy use number as Mtoe rather than TWh... Thanks for the catch twitter.com/reprosci
In related news, can we just use joules for energy rather than Mtoe/TWh/MMBTUs/etc.? Energy unit conversion is the bane of my existence...
