Ocean heat content in 2019 was the warmest on record by a sizable margin. Between 2018 and 2019 the oceans absorbed an amount of heat around four times larger than all the energy used by humans in the world. link.springer.com/article/10.100…
(For those numbers-inclined, global primary energy use is around 6.8 zettajoules, while the oceans added 25.6 zettajoules of heat between 2018 and 2019).
CORRECTION: The gain in ocean heat content between 2018 and 2019 is actually 44 times larger than human primary energy use, not 4 times. I misread the primary energy use number as Mtoe rather than TWh... Thanks for the catch twitter.com/reprosci
In related news, can we just use joules for energy rather than Mtoe/TWh/MMBTUs/etc.? Energy unit conversion is the bane of my existence...

Important (and sobering) post from @drvox. The world is extremely unlikely to limit warming to 1.5C, but that doesn't mean we should give up hope. vox.com/energy-and-env… 1/4
If we had started reducing emissions back in 2000, 1.5C would have been achievable. Today it requires a 15% reduction per year, at least barring the deployment of global-scale negative emissions late in the century that don't exist at any meaningful scale today. 2/4
Energy models that get us to 1.5C get around this cliff by removing a ton of emissions from atmosphere, starting quite soon. Its hard to see this happening, and dangerous to bet on it. This figure shows positive and negate emissions in 1.5C scenarios. carbonbrief.org/analysis-why-t… 3/4

The change in the oceans' heat energy measured in zettajoules - that's 10^21 joules.

It's incredible how much better fossil fuels are at making the Earth retain solar energy than they are at producing *useful* energy. Let's think about what a zettajoule means.

Thread. Only one of subjects in these pics answer to #sustainability without eco damaging side effects. Imagine, amount of #energy used to heat millions of offices schools public buildings homes. Could easily be cut in half simply wearing #wool, #sheepskin etc.

Someone asked me about a thread on #Flatearth. So I will go over with you how I became to believe the area we inhabit is flat.
A year ago someone told me it was and I thought it was nonsense.
Those pizza box pics of water running off the edge.
I started to view some videos of people trying to measure the curve that should absolutely be measureable, after all, we can only see so far and it curves, right? Wrong. Here is one, not the one I watched but it works.
Nat Geo did a similar measurement type video. Obviously not done correctly, no measurements of height of laser, water the boat was on was rolling with waves and horizon was altered.

The IPCC report on holding global warming to 1.5°C released Sunday calls for it. A share of the Nobel in Economics was awarded to William Nordhaus this week for championing it. It's arguably the most efficient and powerful climate policy available.
