Boris Johnson says he wants to see county lines drug gangs 'totally wound up'. We can all agree on the importance of tackling gang crime and violence. Here's a thread on how we can actually make progress 👇🏿
We need to recognise that the war on drugs has failed. 2,000 "county lines" routes are worth £3 million per day. Demand for cocaine and other drugs has rocketed. We need a new evidence-based approach to drugs policy. news.sky.com/story/line-18-…
Let's start by legalising cannabis. This could take up to £2.5 billion out of the hands of criminals. The Canadian model is not perfect, but it shows that a legally regulated market can help protect children from harm and reduce profits for gangsters. theguardian.com/society/commen…
The criminals behind county lines are not the young men in tracksuits, but men in suits. It's run by a network of international organised criminals. The home secretary, the National Crime Agency and the Met Police need to go after those at the top.

Beyond drugs, the root causes of gang crime have been the same for generations. Social deprivation, exclusion and poverty push people towards crime. Rising inequality, the housing crisis, and a decade of austerity are driving this surge.
We need to reverse savage cuts to local services. Between 2012 and 2016, 600 youth centres closed, 3500 youth workers lost their jobs and 140,000 places for young people disappeared. We are leaving vulnerable young people with no way off the streets.

Cuts to neighbourhood policing, of course, have made it worse. Police Federation leaders warned that traditional British policing has been left “on its knees and facing extinction” after years of austerity. We've lost more than 20,000 officers since 2010.

But Stop and Search is no silver bullet. A Home Office study found “limited evidence of the effectiveness of stop and search in reducing crime”. Reducing trust between police and the communities they serve will only make things worse.

The answer is a radical, new and properly funded public health approach to gangs dealing drugs and violent crime. Scotland's Violence Reduction Unit shows us how effective addressing root causes, as well as responding to instances of violence, can be. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotla…
