There have been what feels like an incredibly high number of unprofessional social media posts/ videos coming out of healthcare professionals the last few days. I am going to do a quick #SoMe thread/tweetorial on how to use social media AND STAY professional AND authentic
1. Remember the basics. Be HIPPA compliant. No patient names, ages, picture, videos, identifiers.
2. Don’t insult or make fun of your patients. We are seeing people at their most vulnerable. You don’t know their story or what kind of day or life they have had.
3. Don’t post something about a patient you wouldn’t want posted about yourself or a family member
4. Don’t belittle patients for asking questions or not being able to pronounce something. Applaud them for asking questions.
5. Don’t insult ppl with different opinions than you.
6. Don’t insult other specialties.
7. Don’t ridicule trainees. They are there to learn.
8. Don’t ridicule anyone on your team. Nurses, doctors, social workers, janitorial staff, food service workers, we are a team. Don’t insult the members of your team.
10. Don’t post a video of a trauma or traumatic situation and try to use it to boost your profile or get likes. Someone may have just lost a loved one. Respect them and their pain.
11. Do Use ur platform to spread knowledge and evidence based medicine. Combat fake information.
12. Do use your platform for kindness. Show those who are not in healthcare the beauty of our professions. Describe the humanity and the empathy and the resilience of the human spirit. Share the special moments that make what we do so amazing and rewarding.
13. Do share ur wins, and if u feel comfortable share ur struggles. Not bc you hope it goes viral, but bc your story may help someone else.
14. Do Find people you admire and reach out, connect with them. Find mentors. Network. Make connections.
15. Do Learn. Educate urself.
16. Do use social media to improve the world we live in. Use your platform, your education, your knowledge, to leave this world a little better than when you entered it.
17. Don’t try to use social media to “keep up with the Joneses”. You do you.
18. Most importantly, have fun using social media, but be respectful. The day we lose our humanity is the day our patients suffer. And the day we forget that our patients r people w families & lives outside of our hospital walls, is the day we need to reflect. #medtwitter
