I am enthusiastically endorsing @BernieSanders for President. Here's the story of my decision:
My patients are struggling in our current healthcare "system." Diabetic teens ration insulin when they know their family can't afford prescriptions, supplies, groceries, AND rent. I care for moms & newborns who lose coverage after moving to a different state to be near family.
Many of my pediatric patients with complex pre-existing conditions & supposedly “good” insurance from their parents’ employment face ridiculous obstacle courses from insurance companies to get necessary care like imaging or consultations with specialists & therapists.
Some of my older patients are college students who drop out because their family needs someone to care for a grandparent. The costs of long-term care PLUS college tuition are just too much to bear.
What I need my fellow Americans to understand is this: when my patients struggle in the current American healthcare system, it’s not because they’re unfortunate. It’s because the system is unjust.
There’s a difference between what’s unfortunate & what’s unjust, especially in healthcare. It’s unfortunate to be diagnosed with diabetes as a teenager. It’s unjust that many patients ration insulin while #BigPharma makes exorbitant profits off a drug that’s almost 100 years old.
It’s terribly unfortunate to be diagnosed with cancer. It is unjust that a diagnosis of cancer can mean losing your job & health insurance because you’re too sick to work. Insurance you paid for in every paycheck & that was supposed to be there for you if the worst happened.
.@BernieSanders knows the difference between what's unfortunate & what's unjust. I am in the #MedicareForAll movement to fight side-by-side with Bernie & make health care a basic human right regardless of where you live, what you earn, or what you look like.
Understanding the difference between misfortune & injustice is fundamental to health AND racial justice. Right now, 59% of America’s uninsured are people of color. #MedicareForAll is not a cure-all for racism in health care but is a CRITICAL part of improving racial equity.
Currently, patients who survive cancer are often left with medical debt & financial ruin. Diabetic patients are struggling between paying for insulin or their rent. #MedicareForAll ends those injustices by significantly reducing the prices of drugs like chemotherapy & insulin.
#MedicareForAll provides patients with reliable, comprehensive coverage regardless of their employment status. Families will have the freedom to move from state to state or job to job without having to worry about insurance coverage because Medicare For All will move with them.
The grandparents in my clinic won't have to hold their glasses together with tape. They can get new ones because #MedicareForAll will cover vision. Patients with disabilities can live with dignity at home & in their communities because Medicare For All will cover long-term care.
To build #MedicareForAll, it’s going to take all of us, not just @BernieSanders. Together, we can fight #BigPharma, the insurance industry, & all their lobbyists. Together, we can deliver real health justice for every person in America. Join us at berniesanders.com
