Over the past 4 years I've run approximately 50 mobile journalism workshops for newsrooms. Here are some thoughts for media outlets keen to get reporters using their phones. #mojo [THREAD]
Best practice: create a standard mojo kit. The basics: a tripod, tripod mount, an external microphone and good quality USBC or Lightning adaptor to connect traditional 3.5mm microphones to the phone. One of the best clip-mics is the @BOYAmic BY-M1. boya-mic.com/lavaliermicrop… #mojo
Challenges you can expect if reporters use their own phones: unusual file formats, inability to record in 1080p / 4K, mix of personal / work content. If you can, add a standard phone to mojo kits. Needn't be LATEST model; most phones from the past 3 years are good enough. #mojo
You can reduce (but not rule out) problems by having all your reporters use ONE app for filming, to standardise frame-rate, resolution, & file formats. Best option: @FiLMiCPro. filmicpro.com. A free Android alternative is Open Camera opencamera.org.uk #mojo
If your reporters will only be using their phones to film / take photos, and head office will do all the editing, have your reporters use a file-transfer app that sends full-size files. For this, @wetransfer or @telegram are better options than @whatsapp. #mojo
If your reporters will be editing as well as filming, I recommend @LumaTouch / luma-touch.com if your reporters are on iPhones (similar to FCPX or Premiere, one-off cost), or @KineMaster (IOS / Android, monthly subscription). kinemaster.com #mojo
Broaden your learning! Join @GlenBMulcahy's global mobile journalism Group on Facebook. Launched in 2015, it's now over 6,000 reporters, PR producers, creatives, filmmakers, podcasters sharing knowledge about apps, kit and workflow: facebook.com/groups/mojofes… #mojo
Attend a conference! @GlenBMulcahy organises the annual @mojofestival. This year it's in London 13-14 May, & is free to attend. (Yes, free.) I've been every Mojofest since 2015 and it's one of the most useful, practical, friendly events around. mojofest.eu #mojo
Start your personal #mojo learning journey with the Mobile Journalism Manual. I wrote this for @KASMediaAsia in 2018 and keep it regularly updated with new apps, kit & case studies. It's used as a set text at > 30 universities & is free. (Yes, free.) mojo-manual.org.
Short plug: If your newsroom, NGO or business needs a workshop or online training in mobile journalism (or podcasting, multimedia production, and social media content creation), drop me a DM with what you have in mind, & we can line up a time to chat. #mojo / END
