This morning, across the DC area, dozens of the most powerful people in the country—from the Chief Justice to GOP Senators and representatives—see this and think “this is dictator sh*t and someone should stop it.” Yet no one looks in the mirror and thinks “that person is me.”
And then they turn away from the mirror, glance sheepishly over at their cherished collection of Winston Churchill books, and trudge off to work at the Capitol where they live in fear of a mean tweet from a possibly insolvent reality TV star.
Imagine it's January 1999. Bill Clinton, currently on trial in the Senate, appears on CNN & says "Shifty Lindsey Graham is a CORRUPT POLITICIAN, and probably a very sick man. [Wagging his finger at the camera] He has not paid the price, yet, for what he has done to our Country!"
Lindsey, Susan Collins, Mitch McConnell, and every other GOP Senator would have been falling over themselves to get William Rhenquist to say something about this outrageous behavior by the President. Lindsey: "This is just more evidence of his efforts to obstruct justice!!!"
The only good thing about this episode is that the President is making every single member of the GOP own every single, unconscionable thing he has done and said. No Republican can escape full complicity, making the choice in the next election starkly clear.
If Donald Trump was a private citizen, being tried for campaign finance violations (let's just say), and he tweeted this about the prosecutor--"He has not paid the price, yet, for what he has done"--he would almost certainly be charged with a serious crime. Immediately.
Someone should ask Bill Barr what he would do if a defendant sent a tweet like that about one of the prosecutors who works for him. Would he just let that pass without mention? "Meh, nothing to see here?"
I have no doubt, however, that good old Pierre Delicto with his 142 followers (1/4 of whom just happen to have the last name of Romney) will be tweeting with righteous indignation about how inappropriate the President's tweet was this morning.
When the Trump Administration is over, I'm gonna sit down and write a pamphlet entitled "Profiles in Conservative Courage."

Ok, more like a leaflet.

Fine, a blank 3 X 5 notecard, that actually has something written on it but you can only see it if you put lemon juice on it.
