Parnas and Fruman thought they had some means of taking control of key pieces of Ukraine's natgas infrastructure – whether by having it privatized and sold off to their partners, or by installing their guys on the State company boards to guarantee their control over it.
Ukraine does have decent natural gas reserves of its own, but what makes Ukraine unique is its vast underground gas storage capability, unrivaled by anything else in Europe. It's an asset that whoever is funding Global Energy Producers would love to seize control of.
"Having control of such [storage] facilities will allow us to provide timely delivery to our largest clients, while facilitating highly lucrative buying and hedging strategies."
