HUGE NEWS:

"10 years after vaccination was introduced, we detected no HPV16/18 infections in 16-18 yearolds (0% of n=584)"

HPV 16/18 cause ~70% of cervical cancer

That's an ~amazing~ result

assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/upl…
This is from data for women getting a test for chlamydia - by the numbers, the highest risk population for HPV

That there is ~no~ infection among these people is a massive win
The early predictions - that we might eliminate cervical cancer altogether - no longer seem so far fetched
Note: this is similar to the trend seen in Australia, which has had a nationwide HPV vaccination program since 2005
Note 2: In Australia, this has also resulted in a massive drop in the rates of high-grade cervical abnormalities in women who received the vaccine
Other things worth noting:

- no evidence in the UK data that HPV 16/18 are being replaced with other cancer-causing strains of HPV
- no evidence that HPV vaccination changes sexual behaviour (from other studies)
