The paratransit mode needs to be confined to where it belongs. Where it will be playing a feeder role for BRT and other formal modes. Nigeria is about the only country where paratransit competes with formal modes of public transportation.
Some would argue that paratransit is creating employment for our teeming youths. That is very true. It is for the same reason the government did not consider outright ban.
The exclusion of paratransit from major routes means higher patronage and higher income for BRT.
That in turn would mean more buses, wider coverage, improved ridership and more pax trips at affordable prices.
Unless we do not want the BRT anymore. But in the history of public transportation, the BRT is rated as one of the best things that happened to urban mobility in the
world. However, here in Lagos, the option is facing severe financial setbacks that could lead to exorbitant fares.
This is coming at a time when Estonia, Luxembourg, and other cities of Europe and America are offering free public transportation services to their citizens.
Then comes the environmental angle where carbon emissions are hyped by encouraging more vehicles on the highways.
While Lagos does not seem to be ready for free buses now, the governor wants to get something right, and that is a sustainable BRT service.
Mr. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu @jidesanwoolu deserves commendation.
