What pressure was put on the Palestinians? They were offered 95+% of the pre-67 West Bank + Gaza in Camp David/Taba, said NO and started the murderous Al Aqsa Intifada.
As a reward for almost 4 years of murderous terrorism, Israel withdrew completely from Gaza in 2005, and it was hoped the Palestinians would build there a peaceful prototype for a Palestinian state.
In the Israeli elections of 2006, the Kadima party -- founded to get the Gaza withdrawal done, and running on a platform promising more withdrawals and peace efforts - won.
In the 2006 Palestinian elections, Hamas won, and soon took over Gaza.
While Hamas was busy taking over Gaza and transforming it into a terrorist camp and launchpad for rockets targeting Israeli civilians, Ehud Olmert again offered the Palestinians a state of their own, incl. all of East Jerusalem and concessions re. refugees. Abbas said NO.
Here's a useful reminder from 2009:
"In the Obama administration, so far, it's easy being Palestinian."

Neither Palestinian rejectionism nor Palestinian terrorism mattered -- the Palestinians were recognized by many UN members as a state without ever being held responsible for anything.
