Some of the seats Tories won at the General Election were places where no Tory canvassing teams existed. They flipped Labour seats without any contact rate or team on the ground. Very unpopular view but a rethink is needed on what really works. Targeted Facebook ads destroyed us
And measuring digital reach by the number of views or retweets/shares you get is practically pointless. Zillions can see your video but if the viewer becomes passive, or the content is humorous etc it doesn't translate into votes one. Some viral videos earned no new Labour voters
Labour need to break its fixation with celebrity endorsements. Celebs get free advertising of their product but Labour get little in return. Voters consistently say celebs do not influence their vote. Turns entire election into a joke or freak show, and switches off older voters
Everything you do, you should view to the prism of a cynical voter. How do cynical voters view tik tok videos of celebs crying to vote Labour? How do they view jokey videos? How do they view some canvasser from 100s of miles away banging on their door to tell them how to vote
When you're doing your PhD you're advised to drill your research question down to an explainable single sentence. If you can't do that it is viewed a sign of a poor research project. Elections are the same. Has to be a simple explainable slogan eg "get Brexit done".
Put the whole thread together. Youthquake. Gammon. Viral videos. Celeb endorsements. Jokey videos. Tears down tik tok. Viral gotcha content. Weak vague slogans. Sending armies of outside canvassers to marginals that lean Tory with an older electorate. A shambles quickly ensues.
I kept some of those Facebook ads I received so you can view them here. What always struck me when looking at them was the explanation of who was paying for them - in grey. Who are these folk? How is the spend declared?
