I said it on Saturday when @rerutled and I went and I felt as much today at the receptionist: Taking Shape: Abstraction From the Arab World is a breathtaking and revolutionary art show. I had such a great time tonight. Met friends I hadn’t seen in over a decade. Made new friends.
So many conversations with so many art lovers excited to see artists from our part of the world recognized and celebrated. One of the highlights was meeting @ZidanSports and his wonderful family, who were there to celebrate his grandmother the artist Menhat Helmy. #TakingShapeNYU

Horrific: For months, #Egypt ignored paperwork that could have allowed Moustafa Kassem, to be released from prison and instead the 54yo US citizen from NYC died behind bars earlier this month, according to his lawyer and a Democratic senator. nbcnews.com/news/world/ame…
Kassem, who was arrested in 2013 and charged with terrorism-related offenses that both the U.S. govt & human rights groups said were baseless, died on Jan. 13. He was a diabetic who had been on a liquids-only hunger strike since his conviction in an Egyptian court in Sept 2018.
Egypt had told U.S. officials that Kassem would be eligible for release and deportation to the US if he renounced his Egyptian citizenship. Kasseem dropped his appeal of his conviction & submitted papers to relinquish his Egyptian citizenship more than 6mths ago, his lawyer said.

Fuck Trump. Fuck white supremacy. Fuck Islamophobia. Fuck the Muslim Ban. Fuck the travel ban and this cruelty that is designed to affect mostly Muslims and Black people.
Do not try to “explain” this ban with articles or statistics that show that people from the countries on the list “have never hurt the USA.” That’s not the point.

The point is cruelty. The point is white supremacy. The point is Islamophobia.

Trump is doing this because he can.
And you should know that once Trump bans - with the blessing of the Supreme Court btw - a certain group of people from anywhere he wants, it means he can ban anyone else at anytime. You’re not Muslim? You’re not from the list? Ditch your false sense of security. It can be you too

The American slave trade seems to have the most popular of accounts. And that might be because the slavers, historians, scholars and the slaves themselves spoke English and understood the English language. And that made it easier for multiple narratives to be found.
